Peace Lily

Spathiphyllum spp.

Toxicity: āš ļø MODERATE TOXICITY – ORAL IRRITATION

Peace Lily

Despite its name, the Peace Lily is NOT a true lily (Lilium) and does not cause kidney failure. However, it contains calcium oxalate crystals that irritate the mouth and digestive tract.

Also known as:

  • White Sail Plant
  • Spathe Flower

Symptoms of poisoning:

  • Drooling
  • Oral pain
  • Vomiting
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Loss of appetite

What to do:

Not usually life-threatening—but uncomfortable.

  1. Wipe your cat’s mouth with a damp cloth.
  2. Offer water or a lick of yogurt to neutralize crystals.
  3. Call your vet if symptoms persist beyond a few hours.
  4. Never confuse with true lilies—this one won’t cause kidney failure.

šŸ’” Key difference: True lilies = fatal to cats. Peace lily = painful but treatable.

Safe alternatives:

  • African Violet
  • Orchids
  • Moth Orchid (Phalaenopsis)
  • Baby’s Tears (Soleirolia soleirolii)
