Sago Palm

Every part is highly toxic to cats—seeds (nuts) are most deadly. Even a single seed can cause severe liver failure, seizures, and death within 24–48 hours.

  • Cardboard Palm
  • Cycads and Zamias

Toxic principles: Cycasin

Symptoms of poisoning:

  • Vomiting (often with blood)
  • Diarrhea (may be bloody)
  • Lethargy or collapse
  • Jaundice (yellow gums or eyes)
  • Seizures
  • Liver failure (within 12–24 hours)

Clinical signs:

  • Vomiting
  • Melena
  • Icterus
  • Increased thirst
  • Hemorrhagic gastroenteritis
  • Bruising
  • Coagulopathy
  • Liver damage
  • Liver failure
  • Death

What to do:

🚨 THIS IS A LIFE-THREATENING EMERGENCY. ACT NOW.

  1. Call your emergency vet IMMEDIATELY—even if no symptoms appear.
  2. Contact the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435.
  3. Do NOT wait. Survival depends on treatment within 2–6 hours.
  4. If possible, bring a sample of the plant or seed.

💡 Warning: Often sold as ornamental houseplants or in landscaping; many owners don’t realize how deadly they are.

  • Parlor Palm
  • Bamboo Palm (Chamaedorea seifrizii)
  • Majesty Palm (safe in moderation)
