Snake Plant

Dracaena trifasciata (formerly Sansevieria trifasciata)

Toxicity: ⚠️ LOW TO MODERATE TOXICITY – GI UPSET

Snake Plant

Snake plants contain saponins, which can cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea in cats. Most cases are mild, but ingestion should still be avoided.

Also known as:

  • Mother-in-Law’s Tongue
  • Viper’s Bowstring Hemp

Symptoms of poisoning:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Salivation
  • Lethargy (rare)

What to do:

Monitor closely—usually resolves on its own.

  1. Remove plant access immediately.
  2. Ensure your cat stays hydrated.
  3. Call your vet if vomiting lasts more than 6 hours.
  4. Consider pet-proofing: Snake plants grow slowly—easy to relocate!

💡 Fun fact: NASA lists it as an air purifier—but not cat-safe!

Safe alternatives:

  • Parlor Palm (Chamaedorea elegans)
  • Bamboo Palm
  • Cast Iron Plant
  • Peperomia obtusifolia
