Google Ads troubleshooting
When paid search clicks reach your store but GA4 does not show the expected campaign, keyword, or ad labels, separate final URL problems from suffix and ValueTrack problems.
Confirm whether UTMs are appended to the final URL, the final URL suffix, or a tracking template.
UTMs are duplicated across account, campaign, ad group, or ad-level settings and GA4 receives conflicting values.
Test one static URL first, then add ValueTrack fields only after the visit appears in GA4 Realtime.
Use this shape before adding keyword, device, match type, or creative placeholders.
If you use the Google Ads final URL suffix, keep the suffix focused and make sure the final URL itself does not already contain the same fields.
Separate a campaign-label problem from a tracking-fire problem. A missing campaign name means GA4 saw the visit but lost the UTM context. No session at all means the click path, consent state, redirect, or GA4 tag may be failing before campaign attribution can even happen.
| Area | Risk | Cleaner move |
|---|---|---|
| Final URL | Already contains old UTMs. | Use one clean URL or move UTMs into suffix. |
| Final URL suffix | Conflicts with account-level rules. | Check every level before adding more fields. |
| ValueTrack | Placeholder does not apply to the campaign type. | Verify the field inside Google Ads documentation and preview tools. |
| GA4 | Visit appears but campaign fields are missing. | Check redirects, duplicate tags, consent, and parameter conflicts. |
Google Ads FAQ
Google Ads UTM values may be missing because the final URL, final URL suffix, tracking template, or account-level settings conflict with each other. Redirects, duplicate UTM fields, consent settings, and GA4 tag problems can also make campaign values look missing.
For a simple launch test, use one place only. Either put a clean static UTM string in the final URL or keep the final URL clean and put the UTM string in the final URL suffix. Avoid duplicating the same UTM keys in both places.
Add ValueTrack fields after a static Google Ads UTM test appears correctly in GA4 Realtime. Then test one placeholder at a time, such as keyword, creative, device, or network, instead of adding every field at once.
If Google Ads shows clicks but GA4 has no session, check whether the landing page opens, the GA4 tag fires, consent mode blocks analytics, redirects drop parameters, or the click opens a page that is different from the tagged final URL.
One verified click path is better than a complicated suffix that nobody has tested in GA4.
